Form-Based Code
Many of us are familiar with Laurel Park’s RSM-9 zoning code. It set standards for what can be built in our neighborhood. The code doesn’t set esthetic standards, but things like building set-backs, porches, lot usage, aesthetic density are all in there.
Five years ago the City Commission established the Urban Design Studio to work with citizens and stakeholders to create a city-wide Form-Based Code to replace the current zoning code.
Under Form-Based Code, the RSM-9 designation is no more. Laurel Park is now under Zone T-3.3 subarea 2.4.5.
A group from LPNA has worked closely with the Urban Design Studio to make sure the RSM-9 code elements are retained under the new code. It’s been a long process, but we’ve found several typos and mistakes that could have had significant impact on the neighborhood and asked they be corrected.
The process is ongoing so we encourage everyone to visit the Urban Design Studio website where you’ll find an explanation of Form-Based Code and a link to the latest draft of the new code. If you have any concerns, please contact Ron Kashden who is spearheading LPNA’s review.
