Alderman Oaks Rezone

The owner of the Alderman Oaks assisted living facility has requested a rezone from their residential zone of “RMF-5” to the mixed-use “Downtown Edge” zone.

The stated reason for the rezone is to add kitchens to their existing complex which would support independent living.  However, the application does not include any site plan so there is no commitment that some other building would be constructed.

Furthermore, this rezone would make the lot eligible for the Tallahassee “Live Local” statue which would allow the lot to have a building that 18 stories tall. That’s 254 feet literally next to single family homes.  Ugh!

LPNA as well as a number of Laurel Park residents spoke at the planning board meeting advocating against the rezone, but the planning board approved it in spite of the objections.

The application will soon be scheduled to go before the city commission, who have the discretion to reject the application for a number of legal reasons.

There are other options available to the owner that would allow them to increase the density of their building and not interfere with their neighbor’s reasonable and peaceful use and enjoyment of their home.
