Form-Based Code

Many of us are familiar with Laurel Park’s RSM-9 zoning code. It set standards for what can be built in our neighborhood. The code doesn’t set esthetic standards, but things like building set-backs, porches, lot usage, aesthetic density are all in there.

Five years ago the City Commission established the Urban Design Studio to work with citizens and stakeholders to create a city-wide Form-Based Code to replace the current zoning code.

Under Form-Based Code, the RSM-9 designation is no more. Laurel Park is now under Zone T-3.3 subarea 2.4.5.

A group from LPNA has worked closely with the Urban Design Studio to make sure the RSM-9 code elements are retained under the new code. It’s been a long process, but we’ve found several typos and mistakes that could have had significant impact on the neighborhood and asked they be corrected.
