1855 Oak Street
The newspaper exclaimed in an article dated December 15, 1926, “Thomas Martin Residence is a Handsome One”. The article goes on to state that the home was built by Owen Burns at a cost in excess of $30 thousand. Every line speaks of the creative genius of its designer.
This Mediterranean Revival house was designed by Thomas Reed Martin, who made it his home. This is one of four Manor homes anchoring the main intersection of the Washington Park subdivision and is surrounded by Mediterranean style bungalows.
The main entry to the house is approached though a formal walled garden rather than through the large cypress door on Oak Street. Over the years, the interior of the house changed drastically, but the stucco exterior has been maintained to look as it did in 1926. Some of the original interior features that were retained include the living room’s Becky cypress beams, the wood floors in the living room and dining room, the stair railing and the gorgeous ceramic tile surrounding the fireplace.
